5-minute sensory profile checklist
Pick by need first — sound, light, touch, smell, movement — not by the autism label alone.
Not medical advice. This is a personal reflection tool for shopping and daily comfort. It does not diagnose anything.
How to use it
For yourself or someone you’re buying for: check what feels true most days. If you’re shopping for someone else, ask or offer a choice when you can. Surprises aren’t always welcome.
Sound
- Everyday noise (HVAC, traffic, chatter) wears me out fast
- I want things quieter but still need to hear people talk
- I use headphones, earplugs, or a quiet room on purpose
- Sudden sounds (doors, alerts, dishes) are the hardest part
Light / visual
- Overhead fluorescents or glare bother me
- Bright screens at night make it harder to wind down
- I prefer warm, dimmable light when I can choose
- Busy patterns or cluttered visuals are tiring
Touch / pressure
- Tags, seams, or scratchy fabric are a big deal
- Light pressure (lap pad, scarf, hug) can feel grounding
- Heavy full-body weight can feel too hot or too much
- I avoid certain textures without thinking about it
Smell
- Strong fragrance sets are usually a no
- Unscented or single-note products work better
- Shared housing smells (cooking, cleaners) are hard to escape
Body / movement
- My hands or feet need something quiet to do in meetings
- Sitting still for long stretches is uncomfortable
- A short stretch, walk, or resistance band helps reset
